Meet Google+

August 1st, 2011
Posted by - The Web Group

After three weeks of semi-closed beta, we’re seeing multiple reports that Google+ will soon open its doors to the rest of the world. The service has been closed to the general public thus far, but that hasn’t stopped them from accumulating 20 millions users through a regulated invitation system.

Widely seen as the behemoth’s first serious challenge to rival Facebook, Google+ was made available earlier this month during beta testing and immediately filled to capacity making it the fastest growing social media network ever. In a blog post announcing the service, Google said: “Online sharing is awkward. Even broken. And we aim to fix it.”

Will it grow to rival Facebook? That remains to be seen, but for now take a look below at Google’s approach to social media.

Circles

Google Plus bears a “striking resemblance” to Facebook, with lists of friends and streaming news feeds. But a key difference is the Circles feature which encourages users to group their friends by category – work colleagues, college friends, book club, family and so on. This aims to fix one of the key problems of Facebook: what you share with your closest friends, you don’t necessarily also want to share with your uncle Leo.

The Google pitch: “We found that people already use real-life circles to express themselves, and to share with precisely the right folks. So [...] we brought Circles to software.”

Sparks

Sparks is Google’s answer to Twitter;  its a way to plug in to news and content you’re interested in from all over the web. You provide a list of interests, and it promises to deliver headlines, images and links from like-minded people and organisations which you can react to, comment on and share with others.

The Google pitch: “Simply add your interests, and you’ll always have something to watch, read and share.”

Hangouts

Basically, Hangouts is a way to have video chats with several people at once. The aim is to make online conversation less like an impromptu phone call and more like a time spent hanging out. You hit the Hangout button, invite anybody you want to join you if they feel like it and shoot the breeze.

The Google pitch: “Whether it’s inside a pub or on a front porch, human beings have always enjoyed hanging out [...] By combining the casual meet-up with live multi-person video, Hangouts lets you stop by when you’re free, and spend time with your Circles.

The Verdict

So far the public response has been positive, but change comes slowly for some Facebook loyals. Influential technology blog TechCrunch was impressed, with their reviewer writing that “I used Google+ for hours and kept coming back. And I have a desire to come back tomorrow.” Social news site Mashable said the project was “a bold and dramatic attempt at social”, adding that it was “solid”, but not “a Facebook killer or game changer”.

Join up (if you can) and find out for yourself.

Is a CMS right for you? Probably.

What is a CMS or “Content Management System?” Essentially, it is a tool that makes editing or publishing new web site content faster and easier.

The beauty of properly implemented CMS is that it will not require the editor to have knowledge of html, CSS, java, etc. to execute most tasks. The technical skills needed to use it are roughly the same as those needed to use Microsoft Word.

Why should a small business owner consider implementing a CMS? Adding content, creating new pages, calls-to-action and blogging are all activities that will improve the performance and accessibility of your web site. Having to wait for an IT person to update your blog or add a page to your website is inefficient at best and could be costing you visitors and customers. A CMS removes that bottleneck.

For most small businesses, the benefits of using a content management system will far outweigh the limitations.

Disadvantages of a static website

  • A static web site is much more expensive to maintain in the long term as any changes have to be made to most pages individually.
  • Static sites impose an increased risk to the business as the person with web skills could fall ill or leave meaning that the website would no longer be adequately maintained.
  • Management is restricted to one machine. If changes need to be made, then edits are only possible where the editor tool is installed.
  • Website editors need significant training and skills to develop the website to modern day standards and practices. This is time consuming, expensive and ongoing.

Advantages of a CMS

  • Enjoy short term and long term cost savings as web site editors only need basic content editing skills and changes to the site wide can be made quickly and easily.
  • Your company image is maintained due to predefined styles and templates being used throughout. Continuity is maintained.
  • Work flow improves and business security increases as more employees are allow to be involved in the maintenance of the website.
  • Content management systems take years of man hours to develop properly. By using one already developed, you get all of the expertise these developers have “accumulated” meaning you receive use of their knowledge which better allows for future growth and expandability of your web site.

A recent study conducted by Multichannel Merchant found that 92.3% of respondents with sales of less than $10 million dollars indicated that their own website is their most popular form of marketing media. If your website is vital to the succes of your business, then you must have a way to easily edit or add content. A CMS is a great place for small businesses to start.

QR Code 101

June 27th, 2011

QR codes, a.k.a. Quick Response codes, are a useful way to encourage individuals to interact with a product or service. They can be used for a variety of engagement tactics including driving consumers to an ecommerce landing page, providing a coupon or giving in-depth product information.

As you can see from the graph below taken from research conducted by Marketing firm MGH in February 2011, getting a coupon or accessing additional information are the two main uses for QR codes. The study also showed one-third of all smartphone users have scanned a QR code and two-thirds have seen one. Users who were aware of QR codes tended to be more educated and affluent and the largest majority of users were ages 35-54. As QR codes become more common, awareness is certain to grow in most demographics.

Before employing a QR code in any campaign, make sure you have covered a few of these basics:

  • This may seem obvious, but many companies have gotten it wrong: make sure the QR code goes to a site designed specifically for mobile. The easiest solution would be a subpage of your current website like www.website/qrcode. In this way you can change where the QR code directs visitors at your leisure without having to republishing a new QR code.
  • This is a follow up to the first point. As with any marketing initiative, measurement is key. Follow the success of a QR code with a trackable URL, which will provide stats on the number of QR code scans per hour as well as the devices used. We recommend the use of Google Analytics.
  • Think through the placement of the code in the real world. If you’re paying for ad space putting a QR code anywhere with bad cell reception such as a subway renders it useless.

Foursquare. You in?

May 31st, 2011

four square logoThere’s a trend growing, that’s been hot for a while now, and it’s got over 8 million people of all ages going out of their way to share their favorite business locations with their friends using iPhone or Android smart devices. That’s more than the population of Switzerland and of that 8 million, over a million joined in the last 12 months? The stunning growth of Foursquare likely means that this is a social medium for you and your business.

What is Foursquare?

By definition it is a location-based social media marketing application that helps you promote your business. In practice it amounts to something much more.

Foursquare is hands down the most prolific location-based app available. Excluding only Facebook Places, it has the largest user base of all location-based social media marketing apps and it’s numbers continue to climb steadily each month. As iPhone and Android smartdevices continue to penetrate the American market (around 30% of US consumers have a smartdevices) it can only result in more Foursquare users. In short, there is no better time to think about joining Foursquare.

Why and how to get set up with Foursquare?

Foursquare’s rise in popularity over the past year has brought about a change in how businesses and brands to use the popular check in service to promote themselves. As Foursquare crests 8 million worldwide users, it has become more and more valuable for brick and mortar businesses to verify their business with the service and offer incentives to get more people in the door.

First thing’s first: Verify your business

Claim your spot in the world of Foursquare by verifying your business. Doing this will allow you to promote specials to Foursquare users and view the demographics of people who check in. Here’s how it works:

  • Create a Foursquare account. Click here to get started.
  • After creating your account, search for your business in the search bar at the top of your screen. Chances are someone has created the location on Foursquare by now, but if you can’t find your business then you’ll need to click “Add a new venue to Foursquare” at the bottom of the page and fill out the requested information. Once you have done that, your venue page will appear.
  • Click the “Claim Venue” link (pictured) to start the verification process. You’ll have to provide your business’s email address and phone number so Foursquare can call and verify. If you verify by phone, Foursquare will call you and give you a PIN that you simply enter on the site. If you verify by mail, the PIN will be sent via postcard.

How do you use Foursquare?

According to John Coe in The Fundamentals of Business To Business Sales and Marketing, “68% of long-term customers stop buying because they just don’t feel loved.” What if you had a simple and easy to manage rewards program that was powered by Foursquare? What if a customer received 10% off every fifth visit? Foursquare makes it easy to keep track of visits and reward your more loyal patrons with mobile coupons, prizes, discounts, or other bonuses.

Here’s how it works:

  • After Foursquare gets in touch with you and verifies your business, you have the option to use the Merchant Platform to set up a special for your venue. This can be as simple as offering a free drink to anyone who checks in, to offering discounts after someone checks in a certain number of times. Click here and click on “Foresquare Specials” to see the special options Foursquare offers.
  • When a Foursquare user is nearby, the system will mark your business with a “Special” marker to let them know you have an offer. Foursquare also offers free stickers for your shop’s window to let passersby know you have a special.
  • Once a customer qualifies for a special, an “unlock” screen will show up on their smartphone. Train your employees to recognize this so they can give the customer his reward.

Remember Foursquare Specials encourage visits to your business!

Get to know your customers by tracking who checks in!

When it comes to analytics, Foursquare makes it easy to find your male to female ratio, who your regular customers are, the time of day you get the most check-ins, and how your customers checking in compares to the customers who are signed up for your loyalty program. You can also see which customers are sharing their check ins on Facebook or Twitter and spreading the word to their friends and followers.

If used correctly, it can yield lots of useful data. For example if men dominate your location, you can change your marketing to appeal to more women. To view the stats, simply visit your venue’s page after you have verified it with Foursquare.

It is clear that Foursquare has a role for just about every business and best of all . . . its free! Go claim your business and get your customers started lining up!
